NAMI-086 Sputnik was developed in 1962 as a prospective model for the Serpukhov plant, with an original body designed by V. Rostkov and E. Molchanov and V.A. Mironov taking an active role in the engineering. Many of its components and assemblies were shared as closely as possible with the invalid carriages already produced at Serpukhov, and since the car was intended for disabled drivers, it used an electromagnetic clutch.
The car measured 3,100 mm long, 1,400 mm wide and 1,260 mm tall on a 2,100 mm wheelbase, with a rear-mounted engine driving the rear wheels in a 2+2 coupe body reaching a top speed of 75 km/h. Power came from a V-configuration gasoline engine derived from the ZAZ-965 with its displacement halved, giving 2 cylinders and 497 cc with 4 overhead valves, producing 15 hp (11 kW) at 4,000 rpm, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension was independent and torsion-bar front and rear, with hydraulic drum brakes, a 12-volt electrical system, and 5.20-10 tires.
