Back in 1965, Chevrolet wowed the automotive world with the introduction of the Mako Shark II concept car. This stunning vehicle, also known as XP-830, was a true showstopper with its futuristic design and powerful performance.
The Mako Shark II was the brainchild of GM designer Larry Shinoda. After reimagining the original Mako Shark body, Shinoda unveiled the Mako Shark II to the public in 1965. This groundbreaking concept car would go on to influence the design of the iconic C3 Corvette, which debuted in 1968.
Chevrolet produced two versions of the Mako Shark II, with only one being fully functional. The non-running show car featured square section side pipes and a unique squared-off steering wheel, giving it a truly avant-garde look. The functioning version, on the other hand, boasted a retractable rear spoiler and a square section bumper that could be extended for added protection.
Under the hood, the Mako Shark II was powered by a 427 Mark IV engine, setting the stage for future Corvette models. The distinctive paint scheme, with blue/gray on top and silver/white along the rocker panels, paid homage to its predecessor, the original Mako Shark, which was retroactively named "Mako Shark I".
In 1969, Chevrolet took the Mako Shark II back to the drawing board and transformed it into the Manta Ray. This updated version featured a front spoiler, redesigned grille, external exhaust pipes, and a sleeker rear design with a buttress style rear window. The Firestone tires were swapped out for Goodyear tires, adding to the Manta Ray's improved performance.
Today, both the Mako Shark II and Manta Ray are cherished treasures in the GM Heritage Center Collection. These legendary concept cars continue to captivate car enthusiasts and serve as a testament to Chevrolet's innovative spirit and design prowess. The Mako Shark II/Manta Ray will forever hold a special place in automotive history as a true icon of its time.
