Experience the Excitement of the 1989 Plymouth Speedster

Mar 29, 2025

In 1989, Plymouth introduced the Speedster concept vehicle that was designed to appeal to the younger generation who embraced high-performance motorcycles and open sports cars. This unique vehicle was a true blend of these two worlds, creating a futuristic and exciting driving experience.

The exterior design of the Speedster was like nothing seen before. Front fenders and hood were combined to create a motorcycle-type fairing that wrapped around the front of the car to the doors. Pop-up upper and fixed lower light bars were integrated within the faring, adding to the sleek and dynamic look of the vehicle. The low wrap-around windscreen further enhanced the motorcycle/sports car theme, making it stand out on the road.

Step inside the Speedster, and you'll find yourself in a cockpit that truly immerses you in the driving experience. The interior featured a molded plastic tub with a fixed seating surface upholstered in a unique "wet suit" material. Removable foam pads added to the comfort level, and the rugged interior could be easily hosed out for cleaning. Adjustable driving positions with movable steering and foot controls allowed for a customizable and ergonomic driving experience.

Under the hood, the Speedster was powered by a normally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder Mitsubishi-built engine. Paired with an independent four-wheel suspension, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, and a three-speed automatic transmission, this vehicle delivered a thrilling performance on the road. The wheels and tires were specially made with three-spoke vented fins for cooling, adding to the overall high-performance capabilities of the Speedster.

With its compact dimensions of 130.2 inches in length, 61.2 inches in width, and 45.2 inches in height, the Speedster was a nimble and agile vehicle that was sure to turn heads wherever it went. The wheelbase of 81.7 inches and track of 53.5 inches further added to its sporty and dynamic characteristics.

Overall, the 1989 Plymouth Speedster was a true reflection of what the future of automotive concepts could hold. With its innovative design, high-performance capabilities, and futuristic features, the Speedster was a vehicle that embodied excitement and thrill on the road. Experience the excitement of the Plymouth Speedster and take a ride into the future of automotive engineering.
