In the mid-1980s, Ford Motor Company was pushing the boundaries of automotive technology with their innovative concepts. One such example was the 1985 Ford HFX Aerostar, a revolutionary vehicle that showcased cutting-edge electronics, safety features, and design elements that were ahead of its time.
This futuristic concept vehicle, also known as the HEX Ghia Aerostar, was truly a marvel of engineering. With 26 on-board computers controlling a wide range of electronic systems for safety, performance, and comfort, the HFX Aerostar was a true glimpse into the future of automotive technology.
Jack J. Telnack, Vice President of Design at Ford, described the Ghia Aerostar as the "most advanced fully-engineered concept vehicle ever built by Ford Motor Company." It took a dedicated team 27 months to bring this vision to life, with six different organizations within Ford and 17 outside suppliers collaborating to make it a reality.
The electronic features of the Ghia Aerostar were truly groundbreaking. From front seat safety belt sensors that could measure braking effort and lock the restraints when necessary, to a sleek new steel exterior with flush glass designed and fabricated by Ghia Studio in Italy, the HFX Aerostar was a true pioneer in automotive technology.
Under the hood, the HFX Aerostar was powered by a V6 engine capable of delivering 162 horsepower and 237 Nm of torque. Paired with rear-wheel drive, this concept vehicle was as powerful as it was advanced.
The Ghia Aerostar was not just a one-off concept either. Two production Aerostars served as the foundation for this groundbreaking vehicle, with one being transformed into the sleek design we see today and the other serving as a "test bed" for developing new components and systems.
In the end, the 1985 Ford HFX Aerostar was not just a concept vehicle - it was a testament to Ford's commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the automotive industry. With its advanced electronics, safety features, and performance capabilities, the HFX Aerostar truly was a vision of the future.
