In 1988, car enthusiasts were in for a treat at The Automobilsalon in Geneva when the world premiere of the Irmscher GT took place. This pure-blooded Grand Tourismo captured the attention of many with its unique design and classic engineering conception.
The Irmscher GT was a coupe, 2+2 seater, with a front engine set back layout - a feature that is now known as a Front-Center-Engine, providing a well-balanced road handling experience. The use of approved Opel components ensured reliability and performance.
Under the hood, the Irmscher GT boasted a newly developed ecological 3.6 liter 6-cylinder catalytic converter engine, producing 200 hp and accelerating the prototype from 0-100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. This powerhouse engine was also available for the Senator, further solidifying its performance capabilities.
Equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, a new McPherson front axle, semi-trailing arm rear axle, and an anti-lock braking system from the Omega 3000, the Irmscher GT was a force to be reckoned with on the road. Wind tunnel testing revealed a maximum speed of 245 km/h, showcasing its impressive performance capabilities.
The well-proportioned design of the Irmscher GT incorporated the latest aerodynamic findings, ensuring minimal lift of the front and rear axles. The vehicle body, made entirely of plastic, was connected to the Omega chassis using modern adhesion techniques.
The decision to use high-quality Opel production components and the existing Opel-Service network was crucial in the development of the Irmscher GT. By incorporating numerous standard parts, the Irmscher GT was not only a high-performance vehicle but also practical for everyday use.
With dimensions measuring in at 4590 mm in length, 1780 mm in width, and 1340 mm in height, the Irmscher GT weighed in at 1330 kg, making it a formidable presence on the road.
The 1988 Irmscher GT remains a classic example of a Grand Tourismo, blending performance, style, and reliability into one impressive package. Its world premiere in Geneva left a lasting impression on car enthusiasts, and its legacy continues to live on in the hearts of automotive aficionados.
