In the early 1960s, Ford Motor Company unveiled the experimental two-passenger GT car known as the Cougar II. Designed in the Ford Motor Company Design Center, this unique vehicle boasted features that set it apart from the rest.
The Cougar II sported a fastback roof, concealed “pop-up” headlamps, and a fully instrumented interior that exuded a businesslike feel. Powered by a 260-cubic inch high-performance V-8 engine, this one-of-a-kind unit was a true showstopper.
One of the most intriguing features of the Cougar II was the air pressure relief panel located across the rear of the passenger compartment. This self-operating gate would open when the interior air pressure exceeded 15 pounds per square inch, a feature designed to accommodate the high speeds the vehicle could reach. The roof panel was also detachable, allowing for great pressure to build up against the fixed rear window at high speeds.
The design of the Cougar II was sleek and clean, with a rollover bar integrated into the roof and front and rear bumpers flowing seamlessly out of the sheetmetal surfaces. The unique window-lift mechanism allowed occupants to adjust the curved side glass to any desired position instantly, adding an element of convenience to the innovative design.
Equipped with Dayton straight-laced wire wheels with knockoff hubs and special sports car tires, the Cougar II was not only a sight to behold but also a performer on the road. With a wheelbase of 90.0 inches and an over-all length of 167.8 inches, this GT car commanded attention wherever it went.
The wood-and-aluminum steering wheel that telescoped fore and aft with three inches of adjustment added a touch of luxury to the Cougar II's interior. Overall, this rare and innovative gem from Ford Motor Company was a testament to the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
Although the Cougar II may be a relic of the past, its legacy lives on in the hearts of car enthusiasts who appreciate its groundbreaking design and innovative features.
