This purpose-built, two-seat concept vehicle takes the Outfitters line-up to the extreme edge of adventure, promising a unique driving experience for the off-road enthusiast and extreme sports authority.
J Mays, Ford Motor Company vice president of Design, describes the EX Concept as the farthest extension of the Outfitters family of SUVs yet. It is the most extreme of the Outfitters concept vehicles, built to cater to a unique lifestyle and cohort group. With its high-quality composite body sections on a Chrome-Moly steel frame, the EX Concept is tough, durable, and ready to take on any off-road challenge.
One of the standout features of the EX Concept is its ecto-skeletal design, which allows the mechanical components to be visible. The transfer case and aluminum radiator with dual fans are moved rearward to achieve a 50/50 weight distribution, providing optimal traction in rugged terrain. The removable side body panels are secured to the frame by lightweight aluminum fasteners, adding to the vehicle's rugged appeal.
The EX Concept's exterior design is not for the faint of heart. An exposed front frame structure, honeycomb texture front grille, and four round high-intensity driving lamps give it a tough, solid stance. The bronze tinted windshield can be folded down and clipped to the top of the hood, giving occupants the freedom of open-air driving.
Inside, the EX Concept is just as rugged and durable as the exterior. A full roll cage, black and tan all-weather seats, and a steering mechanism that glides from side to side for easier entry and exit make the interior both functional and stylish. Safety features include four-point safety belts and dual airbags located in the steering wheel and instrument panel.
Under the hood, the EX Concept is powered by a supercharged/intercooled SOHC V6 engine that delivers an impressive 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, this beast is ready to tackle any terrain with ease.
With dimensions that allow for a 52.5-degree angle of approach and a 90-degree angle of departure, the EX Concept is built for extreme off-road performance. Independent suspension with dual coil-over reservoir shocks per corner, 13-inch disc brakes with four-piston calipers, and 33-inch BF Goodrich tires on 17-inch cast aluminum wheels complete the package.
