Blastolene cars represent a fascinating intersection of craftsmanship, engineering, and Americana. Spearheaded by master craftsman Randy Grubb and his partner Michael Leeds, these vehicles are more than just automobiles; they are rolling pieces of art that capture the imagination of car enthusiasts worldwide.
The Blastolene Special: A Masterpiece on Wheels
One of the most iconic creations in the Blastolene lineup is the Blastolene Special, often affectionately referred to as the "Tank Car." Originally built in 2001, this extraordinary vehicle is powered by a Continental AV1790-5B tank engine, previously used in the M47 Patton Tank. The car’s custom-made aluminum body and military-inspired design set it apart in the automotive landscape.
Specifications and Performance
The Blastolene Special originally produced 810 brake horsepower (bhp) at 2,800 rpm, with an impressive 1,560 ft-lb of torque at 2,400 rpm. Weighing in at 9,500 pounds (4,300 kg), it is only 1/11th the weight of the original tank. This weight-to-power ratio is astonishing, especially considering the car's substantial upgrades since its purchase by American entertainer Jay Leno.
Leno, known for his extensive car collection, has driven the Blastolene Special on public streets and showcased it at various events, including popular car meets like Cars and Coffee in Los Angeles. After acquiring the vehicle, he made several modifications to enhance its roadworthiness, including installing a six-speed Allison automatic gearbox, updating the electrical system, and improving the braking system. The engine itself underwent significant upgrades, now estimated to produce a whopping 1,600 hp (1,200 kW) and 3,000 lbf·ft (4,100 N·m) of torque, all while maintaining a somewhat respectable fuel economy of 5 miles per gallon.
Noteworthy Anecdotes
The Blastolene Special is not just a marvel of engineering; it also has a unique place in popular culture. It was introduced in the video game Gran Turismo 4 after the game’s developers stumbled upon it during a visit to Leno’s garage. In one of its early test drives, an oil line rupture led to a dramatic oil spill, making it a memorable moment in the car's history. Leno even referred to it as "The Terminator car" during an episode featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The B-702: A New Chapter
Following the success of the Blastolene Special, the B-702 was introduced as the latest creation from the Blastolene Brothers. This car was designed by Leeds and pays homage to the grand French automobiles of the 1930s, showcasing an impressive length of 19.5 feet and a width of 94 inches.
Design and Features
The B-702 features a striking design with a dramatic separation between the body and pod-style front fenders, accentuated by glass grille bars and stylish woodlight headlights. Powered by a 702 cid V12 engine, which produces 650 ft-lbs of torque, the B-702 combines performance with luxury, driving smoothly thanks to a modern Allison 4-speed transmission and 4-wheel power disc brakes.
With a hand-formed aluminum body and a chassis finished to show quality with nickel plating or powder coating, the B-702 is a stunning sight. The interior is wrapped in maroon leather, and the oversized speedometer cluster is reminiscent of classic Lincoln Zephyr models. It debuted at the Quail Lodge in Monterey, CA, in August 2007 and has since captivated audiences with its blend of American muscle and refined design.
The Blastolene Philosophy
The creations of Blastolene reflect a unique blend of American automotive tradition and European design aesthetics. The team is known for their oversized V12-powered cars, emphasizing the beauty of high-powered, large-displacement engines while maintaining a refined look. Each car is a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic vision of its creators, resulting in one-of-a-kind masterpieces that are as much art as they are vehicles.
