The Outrageous 1980 Lamborghini Athon: A Roadster Prototype Like No Other

Feb 03, 2025

At the 58th Turin Motor Show, Lamborghini brought out one of the most original and eye-catching cars on display - the Athon prototype. Designed by Bertone, this roadster pushed the boundaries of the concept to the extreme, creating a truly unique and striking vehicle.

The Athon was based on the Lamborghini Urraco, using the same chassis and length. However, Bertone took this foundation and transformed it into something truly extraordinary. The rear of the car, in particular, emphasized the sheer power of the engine, with the wings adding to the overall sense of strength and performance.

One of the standout features of the Athon is its ample windscreen, which has a pronounced double curve and an original chromatic effect. This central styling element adds to the overall futuristic and bold design of the car, setting it apart from anything else on the road.

In the world of Bertone prototypes, the Athon marked a return to creating international Motor Show sensations. After more practical models like the Volvo Tundra and the Fiat Ritmo Cabriolet, Bertone went all out with the Athon, allowing his creativity to shine once again.

Under the hood, the Athon is powered by a mid-mounted transversely positioned V8 engine with a capacity of 2996 cc. This powerhouse delivers a whopping 260 hp at 7500 rpm and 274 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm, propelling the car to a top speed of 260 km/h.

With dimensions of 3967 mm in length, 1887 mm in width, and 1070 mm in height, the Athon is a compact but powerful roadster. Weighing in at 1350 kg, the Athon is a true lightweight performer.

Overall, the 1980 Lamborghini Athon is a true masterpiece of automotive design. Its bold styling, powerful engine, and unique features make it a standout in the world of concept cars. It may have been a prototype, but the Athon will always be remembered as a true icon of automotive innovation.
