Rinspeed Nissan 300 ZX "Speed-Art" - High-Tech Art with 420 hp

Mar 21, 2025

In 1992, at the Geneva Motor Show, a truly unique creation took center stage - the Rinspeed Nissan 300 ZX "Speed-Art". This high-tech sports car, boasting an impressive 420 hp, was a collaborative effort between Nissan Motor (Schweiz) AG and the renowned tuning specialists, Rinspeed AG. The goal was to merge art, automobiles, and speed into one magnificent masterpiece.

The "Speed-Art" was more than just a car; it was a moving canvas for Swiss artist Rolf Knie. Famed for his circus paintings and captivating portraits, Knie took on the challenge of visually representing the raw power of the 420 horses under the hood. The result was a stunning work of art, with 420 horses painted directly onto the car bodywork.

But the beauty of the "Speed-Art" wasn't just skin deep. Under the hood, the 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine received a significant boost to achieve the impressive 420 hp output. Larger sports turbo chargers, modified injection systems, and a hi-flow exhaust system were just a few of the enhancements that contributed to the car's exceptional performance.

The modifications didn't stop there. The running gear, brakes, and steering were all fine-tuned to match the increased power specifications. The "Speed-Art" featured HKS running gear, adjustable shock absorbers, switchable ABS, and HICAS all-around steering. Specially manufactured Rinspeed spoilers, rear skirts, and 18-inch wheel rims completed the racing model exterior.

Inside, the "Speed-Art" was transformed into a true racing machine. Finest quality leather-covered Recaro A8 sports seats, a roll bar for added protection, and a Rinspeed sports steering wheel were just a few of the design features that added to the sporty ambiance of the cabin.

The "Speed-Art" wasn't just a showpiece - it was a powerhouse on the race track. With a top speed of over 300 km/h and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, this high-tech work of art proved its worth on the Hockenheim circuit.

While there were no plans to race this one-of-a-kind creation, valued at around 250,000 Swiss francs, the "Speed-Art" was destined to be preserved for public admiration. A true fusion of art, technology, and speed, the Rinspeed Nissan 300 ZX "Speed-Art" left a lasting impression at the Geneva Motor Show of 1992.
