The ŠKODA VISION GT was a study of a single-seater all-electric sports car, inspired by the 1100 OHC that competed on racing circuits in the previous century. The project began in 2019, as the design team looked to celebrate the brand's 125th anniversary by paying homage to its racing history. The design team drew inspiration from the freshly restored ŠKODA 1100 OHC, considering both reviving the original design and creating a more futuristic concept for the digital world of the future. Ultimately, they decided to combine the two, creating a fusion of past and future.
The VISION GT was first created entirely in a digital environment, where the designers sketched out different versions and combined their ideas into a final concept. They pushed their boundaries, resulting in a vision of a single-seat electric sports car resting on a slightly modified platform of the production OCTAVIA RS. The only limit was their imagination.
The team also thought through various details to ensure optimum handling characteristics, including active aerodynamics and an active cockpit with a spring-mounted driver's seat for ideal load balancing. They even designed a flattened carbon steering wheel and a flat screen on the on-board system that served as a windshield while displaying important information as a head-up display on the driver's helmet visor.
As the design was refined, work began on animation and a film to present the VISION GT. Using Blender software, the team brought their concept to life, injecting motion into the digital environment to show the transformation of the ŠKODA 1100 OHC into the modern VISION GT study.
Despite being designed for the future digital world, a physical model of the VISION GT was created using 3D printing and skilled craftsmanship from the ŠKODA Design department, allowing it to be presented at the Design and Transformation exhibition in Brussels. Visitors had the opportunity to admire the digital and physical representations of the VISION GT, showcasing the connection between the digital future and the historical tradition of the Czech carmaker. The exhibition featured the VISION GT alongside products from twelve other Czech companies and their designers, celebrating the Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union.
