Concept Car Of The Day: 2015 Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV Concept

May 23, 2024

The Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV was introduced as a futuristic next-generation full-size crossover that combined the capability and energy efficiency of a dynamic plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain in a muscular-looking yet highly refined vehicle. Every bit as capable off-road as its brawny sheetmetal suggested, it featured a supercharged V-6 engine paired with a high-output electric motor/high-capacity lithium-ion battery, a sophisticated 8-speed automatic transmission, and Mitsubishi Motors' advanced full-time Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive for outstanding performance and tractability in even the most daunting terrain and road conditions. The eco-friendly PHEV drivetrain offered high performance (335 bhp/250 kW) with exceptional fuel economy because of its Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology.

The exterior design of the Concept GC-PHEV was marked by carefully placed angular creases in the sheetmetal that, when combined with the overall imposing dimensions and muscular silhouette of the vehicle, expressed a sense of performance, capability, and safety. The powerful exterior composition made it look as though a master craftsman chiseled it by hand out of a single block of granite. The Concept GC-PHEV also had an array of innovative next-generation safety and convenience technologies including Mitsubishi's signature augmented reality technology AR Windshield and touchscreen-based Tactical Table connected car information system.

Inside, the Concept GC-PHEV's cabin was sophisticated and modern, designed to offer an exceptional degree of comfort for all occupants. The Tactical Table, located in the center of the cabin between the four seating positions, was an innovative new information system that made connected car technology an interactive experience for everyone inside the vehicle. The AR Windshield utilized augmented reality technology to relay critical information in the driver's line of sight across the windshield.

The advanced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain featuring Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology was a perfect complement to the rugged yet refined vehicle like the Concept GC-PHEV. The powerful system consisted of a gasoline-powered supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine paired with a lightweight, compact, high-output electric motor that together produced a maximum of 335 horsepower/250 kW. The main drive lithium-ion battery pack with a storage capacity of 12 kWh was located behind the rear axle and beneath the rear cargo area floor, providing exciting acceleration with plenty of torque while offering excellent fuel and energy efficiency.

In terms of safety, the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PEV was equipped with advanced features like AR Windshield, Rearward Blind Spot Vehicle Warning, Pedestrian Collision Mitigating Auto-braking, Unintentional Vehicle Move Off Control, Driver Monitor, Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Auto Hi-beam Headlights to ensure the safety of the vehicle's occupants and pedestrians alike.

Overall, the Concept GC-PHEV showcased Mitsubishi's commitment to developing innovative and advanced automotive technologies that would likely make their way into future production vehicles, providing enhanced safety, convenience, efficiency, and performance for drivers and passengers.
