In 2013, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled a preview of its China-exclusive model "Mistra" at the Auto Shanghai motor show. The Mistra concept made its world debut at the show, showcasing Hyundai's latest mid-sized family sedan designed specifically for the Chinese market.
At the time, Hyundai aimed to accelerate its efforts in becoming a leading brand in China, the world's largest auto market. The Mistra concept, positioned between the Sonata and Elantra, was developed to meet the needs and preferences of Chinese customers and strengthen Hyundai's presence in the mid-sized segment.
Hyundai unveiled the Mistra concept at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, ahead of the launch of the production version later that year. The company also introduced the Grand Santa Fe premium SUV to the Chinese market at the same event.
Reflecting on the past decade, Hyundai had seen remarkable growth in China since entering the market in 2002. With the establishment of Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Hyundai had become one of the country's mainstream brands. The Mistra and Grand Santa Fe were expected to lead Hyundai into another successful era in the Chinese market.
The Mistra concept, developed in collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group's R&D Center and the Beijing Hyundai Technical Centre, offered insight into the styling of the production version. The mid-sized sedan concept featured a bold and grand exterior design, with elements of modern simplicity, understated sportiness, and smart luxury.
Inspired by the beauty and nobility of the city of Mistra in Greece, the name of the upcoming strategic model signified integrity and quality. Designed to meet the diverse needs of China's urban population, the Mistra targeted young parents in their 20s and 30s, providing them with comprehensive choices in the mid-sized sedan segment.
The Mistra concept was just one of the many vehicles displayed by Hyundai at the 2013 Auto Shanghai, as the company reinforced its modern and sophisticated image with eco-friendly models, in-vehicle IT services, and high-end luxury vehicles. Hyundai's presence at the event showcased its commitment to innovation and quality in the Chinese market.
Looking back at Hyundai's efforts in China in 2013, it is clear that the unveiling of the Mistra concept was a significant moment in the company's journey towards becoming a leading brand in the country's competitive auto market.
