Concept Car Of The Day: 1988 Peugeot Oxia

Aug 24, 2024

Welcome to the Oxiaphonic world! Oxia took its name from a region on Mars called "Oxia Palus" (longitude 0, latitude 0), which was the possible starting point for calculating Martian time. This sporty two-seater coupe, which was very futuristic and designed to offer every freedom, had interior styling that combined functionality and elegance.

Oxia was a High-Performance Gran Turismo coupe prototype, and its full potential was apparent right from the first glance. While not a racing car, this veritable carbon sculpture laid claim to performance characteristics with determined lines designed to withstand the test of time.

Equipped with a 6-cylinder, 24-valve engine offering 680 hp at 8,200 rpm, with four-wheel drive and steering, the Oxia had a short bonnet that dropped away, an ample, angled windscreen, and a near-total absence of overhang. Rear-view mirrors at eye level provided the driver with better road views.

The driver’s position featured a clever combination of steel blue anodised aluminium on the dashboard and full charcoal grey leather finish, typical of the vehicle’s interior and exterior with no matching colors and materials.

The passenger compartment, designed to meet requirements in terms of driving and future communications developments, provided good air circulation and acoustics. The Oxia was fitted with a communication unit linked to a radio telephone with a PC-compatible computer and peripherals. The computer controlled the air conditioning, access to databases with travel data, and navigational support. A hi-fi unit was also provided, giving the vehicle’s passengers the keys to a complete getaway experience.

The Oxia's specifications included a mid-mounted, transversely positioned PRV V6, DOHC, 24-valve, twin-turbo engine with a capacity of 2849 cc, generating 680 hp at 8200 rpm and 726 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. With a top speed of 345 km/h, dimensions of 4610 mm in length, 2020 mm in width, and 1130 mm in height, the vehicle weighed 1375 kg (later reduced to 1250 kg).

The Oxia truly was a groundbreaking and innovative vehicle that pushed the boundaries of design and performance. It remains a testament to Peugeot's commitment to pushing the limits of automotive engineering.
