Concept Car Of The Day: 1977 Triplex Ten Twenty Special / TTS / Sextet

Jun 24, 2024

British designer Chris Humberstone, in collaboration with Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd., embarked on a design study to showcase the potential of a unique, versatile six-seat layout and highlight the latest advancements in safety glass technology. This project led to the creation of the Triplex Ten Twenty Special, a one-of-a-kind luxury sports saloon based on the Alfa Romeo Alfasud.

The main focus of this project was to explore the innovative 'staggered' layout that allows for three rows of two individual seats, providing comfortable and safe seating for up to six passengers. This layout also offers maximum flexibility for carrying luggage, with the ability to fold down seats in various combinations to transform the vehicle into an estate car or even a pick-up truck by removing the tailgate.

The standout feature of the Triplex Ten Twenty Special is its advanced safety glass technology, including the Ten Twenty laminated windscreen and the removable bronze glass roof. These features not only enhance the safety of the vehicle but also contribute to its unique design and functionality.

With the introduction of the Triplex 'Ten Twenty' windscreen, this vehicle became a platform to demonstrate the most advanced volume production motor vehicle windscreen in the world. The tinted green glass components, along with the black rear-wing 'peepholes' and red rear panel, added to the aesthetic appeal of the vehicle while also aiding in reversing.

The bronze glass roof of the Triplex Ten Twenty Special created an open and airy feel inside the car, with a black printed dot pattern to reduce solar heat and light brilliance. Removing the roof transformed the TTS into a 'targa'-style sports car, showcasing the versatility of the design.

Designer Chris Humberstone envisioned a more efficient and flexible future for cars, and many of his innovative ideas were incorporated into the Triplex Ten Twenty Special. With its compact size, light weight, and aerodynamic design, this vehicle boasted impressive performance figures and fuel efficiency.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Chris Humberstone and Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd. resulted in the creation of a truly unique and innovative vehicle that pushed the boundaries of design and safety technology. The Triplex Ten Twenty Special was a testament to the potential of creative collaborations in the automotive industry and served as a platform for the development of new glazing ideas for future vehicles.
