The Toyota SV-1, originally showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in October/November 1971, was the prototype for the Celica liftback that was eventually released in April 1973. Built on a TA22 GT chassis with the frame number TA22-026004, the prototype had originally been a Celica TA22 GT coupe built in May 1971.
The SV-1 retained the mechanicals of the TA22 GT, featuring a 1600cc 2T-G twincam engine. The interior of the SV-1 closely resembled that of the TA22 GT, with the only notable difference being the fabric pattern on the seats. The SV-1 also boasted electric window lifts, which were optional but rare on the TA22 GT. However, the optional air conditioning present in the TA22 GT was not included in the SV-1.
The rear seats of the SV-1 were individually reclining, with the same reclining hinges and latches as the front seats. A center padded vinyl console separated the two rear seats, where seat belts could be clipped when not in use. The spare tire was positioned vertically at the very rear of the cargo area, covered by vinyl.
In terms of design, the SV-1 featured a rear fuel filler similar to early Celica coupes. Toyota later transitioned to side fuel fillers on all Celica models in mid-1972, with the production liftbacks having fuel fillers on the left rear quarter panel. The rear hatch glass on the SV-1 was slightly larger than the production version, with the keyhole located on the beaver panel, in contrast to production liftbacks where it was on the hatch.
Additional features of the SV-1 included a ST type grill – consistent with 1973-1975 production liftbacks – dual exhaust tips at the rear (unlike the single exhaust tip on production Celicas), and an electric aerial in the left rear quarter.
Overall, the Toyota SV-1 offered a glimpse into the future of the Celica liftback, showcasing innovative design elements and features that would eventually be incorporated into production models. With its unique dimensions – 4145 mm in length, 1650 mm in width, 1290 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2425 mm – the SV-1 was truly ahead of its time.
