In May 1969, Holden revealed the experimental research vehicle known as the Holden Hurricane, codenamed RD 001. This aerodynamic wedge-shaped mid-engined car less than 40" high was designed and built by GMH. The brilliant metallic orange coloured vehicle incorporated many advanced features, including oil-cooled disc brakes, a Pathfinder highway route system, and a closed-circuit television rear vision screen.
The two-passenger research vehicle was powered by an experimental V8 engine developed by GMH and positioned in front of the rear axle. The Engineering Department at the GMH Technical Centre in Fisherman's Bend created the Holden Hurricane to study design trends, propulsion systems, and long-range developments.
The exterior of the RD 001 was functional and sleek, designed after wind tunnel tests to provide efficient airflow and stability. The fibreglass body was mounted on a steel box section perimeter frame in three sections, including a canopy that tilted up and forward for passenger access.
Inside, the passenger compartment was padded for safety and comfort, resembling a cockpit. The seats were raised and lowered electronically for ease of entry, and the steering column pivoted upward and forward along with the seats. The cockpit featured electronic digital instrument displays, station-seeking radio, air conditioning, and a Pathfinder automatic route indicator.
The experimental V8 engine, with a capacity of 4146 cc and producing 260 hp, was connected to a rear-wheel-drive system with a clutch and transmission at the rear axle. The oil-cooled front disc brakes operated on a new principle, converting kinetic energy to heat without fading. The rear brakes were conventional single piston discs.
Holden's Holden Hurricane was a futuristic marvel, showcasing cutting-edge technology and design concepts well ahead of its time. The vehicle was a joint effort between styling and engineering, aiming to peer into the future of automotive design. With its unique features and innovative design, the Holden Hurricane remains an iconic symbol of experimentation and innovation in the automotive industry.
