The Bronco Dune Duster was a special customized version of Ford Division's new four-wheel-drive vehicle that was showcased at the International Auto Show in New York Coliseum from April 9-17.
This unique utility/sports-type vehicle was originally designed at Ford's Styling Center in Dearborn, Mich. The customizing was then carried out by Barris Kustom, located at 10811 Riverside Dr. in North Hollywood, Calif.
Numerous interior and exterior modifications were made to the basic six-cylinder Bronco roadster to achieve a distinctive sporty appearance with added luxury and safety features. The exterior paint was specially formulated in a Golden Saddle Pearl color. Modifications included an NHRA-approved roll bar with integral headrests, a windshield designed to coordinate with the contour of the roll bar, walnut appliques on the rear side panels, and exposed chrome exhaust pipes.
The heat shielding rocker panel behind the pipes was formed of black and white anodized aluminum. Chrome wheel lip moldings accentuated the machined steel alloy wheels, equipped with knockoff hubs. The hood was redesigned to incorporate an air scoop for added engine cooling, rubber "snubbers” protected the bumpers from scratches, and a performance-type gas filler added to the sportiness of the trim. Additional modifications included special racing mirrors and unique stepover door panels with a padded sill, built-in step, and an assist handle.
The custom interior featured appointments such as a walnut steering wheel and front bucket seats with russet suede bolsters and perforated leather cushions and seatbacks. An instrument panel trimmed with suede padding was outfitted with walnut-trimmed control knobs. Beige loop carpeting covered the floor of both the front and rear compartments, with narrow walnut strips dividing the carpet in the rear for easier loading and unloading. Both the front seats and the jump seats in the rear area were equipped with deluxe push-button seat belts.
A tonneau cover for rear compartment protection was designed with quick fastening snaps, while the sides of the load bed were topped with a stainless steel rail.
The Bronco Dune Duster also made appearances at other auto shows throughout the country, showcasing its unique features and design to a wider audience.
