Concept Car Of The Day: 1964 Dodge Charger

Jul 11, 2024

In 1964, Dodge introduced the Charger specialty show car, which was based on the 1964 Dodge Polara convertible. The Charger featured a range of custom elements, including a cut down windshield, roll bar with built-in headrests, hood scoops, side rectangular exhaust ports, and a 365 horsepower, 426 cubic inch V-8 engine. The custom Charger rolled on Halibrand magnesium wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wingfoot high-performance tires. Inside the charcoal-gray leather 2-seat cockpit, the Charger featured a deep-dish walnut wood steering wheel, wood gear shift selector handle, and passenger grab handle. Atop a unique divider between the seats sat an 8,000-rpm tachometer.

The Dodge Charger was a groundbreaking show car that symbolized the evolution of the muscle car era. It offered a glimpse into the future of performance vehicles and set a new standard for power and design. During the late 1950s, American car companies shifted their focus from comfort and safety to horsepower and performance. The Charger was a response to this shift, featuring a powerful 426 cubic inch V8 engine with hemispherical cylinder heads.

The Charger made waves in the automotive world by merging sleek design with high-performance capabilities. The car toured auto shows and dealerships for nearly a year before being retired. Fortunately, it was spared from destruction and eventually underwent a full rotisserie restoration in 1999. The restoration included the installation of a Chrysler-built Hemi engine, bringing the Charger back to its original intended glory.

After the restoration, the Charger was sparingly used due to its historical significance and powerful engine. Despite the temptation to push the car to its limits, the owner was cautious about preserving its authenticity. The original 1964 Dodge Charger Concept Car is now being offered at auction, showcasing its place in automotive history and setting the standard for future muscle cars. With its powerful engine and iconic design, the Charger remains a symbol of innovation and performance in the automotive world.
