Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’: an inimitably personal tribute

May 28, 2026

Through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure program, personalization reaches a level where design, craftsmanship and individual narrative become inseparable. The latest example, the Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’, presents a one-of-one interpretation of the open-top W16 hyper sports car shaped around literary inspiration, celestial imagery and deeply personal symbolism.

The project began in October 2023 in Molsheim, where Jascha Straub, Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, met with the owner to define the creative direction for the car. During a series of discussions exploring concepts, color samples and atmosphere, attention gradually shifted toward the poetic presence of the moon and the emotional qualities associated with it. That theme ultimately connected the commission to ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’, the customer’s own literary work inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s celebrated novel and conceived as a continuation of the original story.

The imagery of the moon occupies a central role in the customer’s narrative, depicting the young prince returning from the moon to earth. Bugatti’s design team translated that literary universe into a visual language centered on earth, moonlight and stars, using carefully developed materials, finishes and detailing throughout the car.

To realize this vision, Bugatti created a dedicated colorway defined by copper and bronze tones with a pronounced metallic depth. The finish was developed in earthy shades intended to evoke lunar light while emphasizing the sculptural surfaces of the W16 Mistral under changing conditions.

The front of the car continues this approach through the reinterpretation of the signature horseshoe grille. While maintaining the established three-dimensional architecture, the internal lines were designed to follow the upward movement of the hood, visually extending the flow of the bodywork. Additional exterior details reinforce the composition, including a gold outline surrounding the Bugatti Macaron, copper brake calipers and matching ‘EB’ wheel emblems.

Across the rear sections and upper surface of the rear wing, the lunar theme becomes more direct through the integration of silver stars within the paintwork. The effect required a complex layering and refinement process carried out by Bugatti specialists. Hidden within the active air brake is another reference to Saint-Exupéry’s story: a reinterpretation of the well-known scene featuring the prince and the fox, revealed only when the air brake is deployed.

Inside the cabin, the same narrative continues through contrasting leather tones and embroidered detailing. Terre d’Or leather introduces a lighter atmosphere, while Driftwood provides darker contrast throughout the interior. The door panels feature embroidered lunar motifs surrounded by stitched stars, while additional celestial elements appear on the headrests and center console, where star-inspired details are integrated into the brown-carbon weave.

One of the most intricate details appears within the gear shifter, where a silver rose is enclosed beneath the surface like a piece of jewelry. Created from a 3D scan of a real flower before being sculpted into miniature form, the rose references the symbolism central to the literary inspiration behind the commission.

Every element of the car — from the metallic body finish and silver highlights to the embroidered moon, stitched constellations, carbon inlays and sculpted rose — forms part of a single continuous theme shared between exterior and interior.

The Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ demonstrates how Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division approaches personalization not simply as specification, but as storytelling expressed through materials, craftsmanship and design language. Rather than separating technical object from emotional meaning, this commission brings both together in a singular interpretation shaped entirely around the owner’s imagination and literary universe.
