A Decade Ahead In Design, Concept, And Technology: The 1992 Esoro E301

Feb 22, 2025

In the early 1990s, the automotive world was introduced to a revolutionary concept that would change the way we looked at electric vehicles - the ESORO E301. Designed by ESORO in 1991 and unveiled at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show, the E301 was a game-changer in terms of design, concept, and technology.

One of the most striking features of the E301 was its incredibly low drag coefficient of 0.195, a record value for a four-seater vehicle that still stands today. This, combined with its energy consumption of only 9 kWh/100 km from the mains, made the E301 a leader in efficiency and lightweight electric-driven cars.

Safety, efficiency, and comfort were paramount in the design of the E301. The self-supporting safety passenger cell, made of plastic and consisting of only a few parts, provided a strong structure for the vehicle. The modular bodyshell concept allowed for easy modifications to the rear body sections, making it possible to design the E301 as a coupé, high-back, mini pick-up, or convertible.

Another standout feature of the E301 was its patented swivel windows and double-hinged doors, adding a touch of innovation to the design. The semicircular shape of the safety passenger cell gave the E301 a distinctive look and made it instantly recognizable as an ESORO vehicle.

Weighing in at 620 kg with a payload of 380 kg, the E301 was powered by NiCa rechargeable batteries and an asynchronous motor with a fixed reduction ratio. With an output of 21 kW, the E301 could reach a top speed of 120 km/h and accelerate from 0-50 in 7.5 seconds. The range of the E301 was 100 - 150 km, making it a practical option for daily commutes and city driving.

Overall, the ESORO E301 was a pioneer in the world of electric vehicles, setting new standards for efficiency, design, and technology. Its innovative features and advanced concepts paved the way for the development of compact, lightweight electric cars that we see on the roads today. The E301 truly was a decade ahead in design, concept, and technology.
