One of the earliest attempts to make a flying car was by Frenchman Rene Tampier of France, who built his prototype in 1921. The Tampier was a biplane when aloft. Its wings were folded along the sides of the vehicle when it was converted to the road use, and an extra set of wheels was added for steering and stability.
