One of the earliest attempts to make a flying car was by Frenchman Rene Tampier of France, who built his prototype in 1921. The Tampier was a biplane when aloft. Its wings were folded along the sides of the vehicle when it was converted to the road use, and an extra set of wheels was added for steering and stability. It appears that the pilot sat facing the tail of the aircraft when driving on the road. The Tampier never went into production - one major issue was that the second axle was separate, and needed to be available when the vehicle landed, and needed to be stored when it took off.
