MARQUE X — CONTEMPORARY, LUXURY CONVERTIBLE

The Lincoln Marque X convertible combines state-of-the-art automotive technology and customer-driven functionality. This contemporary, luxury convertible concept car showcases Ford Motor Company's dedication to “cab-forward" design, which has distinguished a number of prior concept vehicles and has worked its way into such production vehicles as Taurus, Escort and the new 1993 Probe.

"Cab-forward is a major element of Ford’s 'M and M' approach to vehicle design," said Jack Telnack, Ford Motor Company vice president - Design. “By that, I mean we maximize the space available for man and minimize the space taken up by the machine.

"This four-passenger vehicle appeals to the driver who appreciates elegance but also wants performance and handling,"

Mr. Telnack noted. “The vehicle's soft and sleek exterior form appeals to both men and women and makes a personal statement of luxury and quality."

“The Marque X will show the public how we envision the future for Lincoln," said Lee R. Miskowski, Ford vice president and Lincoln-Mercury Division general manager.“ We wanted a future flagship, a car that could take on the luxury cars of the world. With Marque X we think we've got that, and then some.

"If Lincoln is what a luxury car should be, then Marque X is what a Lincoln could be," added Mr. Miskowski. "To us, that means a seamless blending of the most advanced technology with thoughtful, beautiful design, inside and out."

Unique to the Marque X is the ingenious top stowage system, which is reminiscent of retractable hardtop designs. The vehicle is finished with Samoan orange pearl paint.

The front underbody of the Marque X has an electronically controlled, speed-sensitive aerodynamic spoiler which deploys at 45 mph. An air spring suspension leveling system also is activated electronically at highway speeds, lowering the front end of the vehicle one inch.

Low profile, space efficient fiber optic headlamps are integrated into the aerodynamic design. The light source for these headlamps is a high output, arc discharge lamp. In addition, light emitting diode (LED) taillamps provide full illumination across the decklid for space efficiency and high reliability.

The exterior rear view mirrors function as an external signaling device — such as a turn signal or brake lamp. This new product is composed of an array of high intensity LEDs behind a directional film that shields the driver's or passenger's eyes from the light and a dichroic mirror, which allows the red light to be seen by drivers of following or adjacent vehicles.

The color-coordinated, highly curved windshield is the largest of its kind ever developed by Ford Glass. By employing an innovative gravity sag forming process, engineers laminated Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sunshield material between two layers of Ford Controllable Light Transmission Glass (FCLG). This electronically controlled sunshield has three sun visor positions, allowing the driver a choice of height adjustments to suit his needs.

The Marque X is powered by a 32-valve DOHC V-8 engine matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. An added state-of-the-art security protection feature is the credit card ignition system, in which a coded credit card is used to start the ignition.

Hot air from the radiator is ducted out through the wheel openings, lowering engine compartment temperatures to protect sensitive electronic controls.

Consistent with the design trend toward larger tires and wheels, the Marque X is equipped with 255/40R-19" tires. These tires are fitted on uniquely designed, highly sculptured cast magnesium wheels.

The leather interior is soft and sculptured with integrated seats, dual air bags and comfortable wraparound rear seating. The oval-shaped exterior design further is complimented with a strong, horizontal band that graphically encircles the interior compartment, flowing through the instrument panel into the doors and around the rear seat. The band houses many of the individual controls for each of the passengers and creates a clean, uncluttered appearance.

The adjustable Steering column has power tilt and telescoping capability as well as infinite memory functions for personalized comfort, control and driver ease of entry and exit.

Also contributing to ease of entry and exit are the Autoglide front seats, which move forward up to four inches when the seat backs are pivoted forward and return to their original pre-set position automatically.

Additional interior features include a voice activated telephone located in a console between the two front seats. A navigation system — part of a multi-function display — enables the driver to determine his or her location at all times. Other displays notify the driver of incoming facsimiles or system malfunctions. The facsimile can be read on the video screen only when the car is parked.

Ford designers and engineers did not forget rear-seat passengers. The front seat backs contain an entertainment system with individual controls and sound systems as well as a pop-up television and video player positioned in the center console for rear passenger viewing. For added convenience, a hot or cold food and beverage storage container is located in the rear seat along with individual air conditioning systems.

Lincoln's Marque X concept convertible, painted a burnt tangerine pearl orange hue, showcased a cab-forward design to maximize the space available for people. This future flagship featured a simulated spare-tire bulge on its decklid, speed-sensitive front underbody spoiler, low-profile fiber optic headlights, 19-inch cast magnesium wheels, and an electronic, speed-sensitive aerodynamic spoiler. Under the hood sat a 32-valve DOHC V-8, matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. A coded "credit card" was used to start the engine, and in the leather cockpit was a voice-activated telephone, navigation system, and fax machine. For rear passengers, the Marque X contained a pop-up TV and dual temperature food and beverage storage container.
