Ford - Connecta

Official press release:

CONNECTA — A FAMILY TAXI

The Ghia Connects electrically powered concept vehicle demonstrates versatility in its ability to carry people and luggage with a great deal of style. "This vehicle has clean, aerodynamic shapes and a very innovative use of interior space," said Jack Telnack, Ford Motor Company vice president - Design.

On the exterior, the Connecta has a double-skinned glass roof which provides insulation from the sun's heat when the vehicle is parked and a cool air flow when moving. A solar panel in the top surface powers the rear roof vent to automatically reduce the internal temperature of the vehicle when parked.

The driver's side of the Connecta has one door, the passenger's side two. "We view the Connecta as a family taxi,"

Mr. Telnack explained, "so we designed it for ease of entry for both adults and children." The two doors on the passenger side open from the center with no center pillar, which allows ease of access to all seats. Safety is assured by an electronic interlock on both doors.

Head and taillights have a new graphic appearance with a projector beam look. The carbon fiber and Kevlar body is painted in a three-coat metallic pearlescent aquamarine finish.

On the inside, Connecta has a light and spacious appearance, partially obtained through the use of color and the minimal structure of the instrument panel and console. Instruments and switches are contained in a multi-function configuration.

Because it is designed to carry people as well as cargo, Connecta has a unique seating arrangement. "A third row of seating — facing rearward — is provided for children," Mr. Telnack. said. "We have designed an innovative swing forward second-row seat to provide access to this additional seating area and given the front passenger seat an integral child seat."

Designed and built by Ford's Ghia Studio in Turin,

Italy, Connecta's carbon fiber body and interior panels were constructed by Pianfei-Lima-Cuneo of Turin. The unique SuedeTouch paint used on the interior was developed by Morton International's Automotive & Industrial Finishes of Troy, Mich. Goodyear designed and produced the unique, ultra low-profile, rolling resistant tires.
