SSANGYONG XIV-1 CONCEPT

Innovative new compact crossover concept takes centre stage on the SsangYong stand at the IAA International Motor Show, Frankfurt 2011

Concept development

The XIV-1 concept is a showcase for SsangYong’s design and engineering talents. The name XIV-1 is derived from the phrase ‘eXciting user Interface Vehicle’, highlighting the show car’s focus on interaction with the driver and passengers.

More than just a design study, XIV-1 is the concept version of SsangYong’s premium B-segment CUV project, which will lead to the addition of another mass production model to the Korean company’s range, and has been developed to display both the heritage and the future design direction of SsangYong Motor. Built to SsangYong’s corporate product development philosophy, ‘Robust, Specialist, Premium’, XIV-1 showcases dynamic, strong yet smooth lines, typifying the true creative qualities of SsangYong Motor design.

Robust aesthetics

The exterior design of XIV-1 with its continuous glass area epitomises the perfect proportions of the compact SUV. Designers took inspiration from the simplicity of the side view of a graceful sailing yacht, which is synonymous with outdoor pleasure and enjoyment. A wide C-pillar and slim roof appear to float above the body, providing a nimble, fast yet strong stance.

XIV-1’s front end styling follows the lead set by SsangYong’s new Korando crossover with a robust yet aesthetically pleasing appearance. Modern LED headlamps are an integral design element of SsangYong’s premium appearance to position the brand within the global marketplace.

Access to the concept’s cabin is via coach doors which do away with the need for B-pillars. This not only provides greater comfort for passengers but also provides the XIV-1 with its sleek, uninterrupted profile.

Specialist interior

The objective of XIV-1 is to maximise the enjoyment of movement while also providing passengers with a moving communication space. SsangYong’s designers have named the interior concept ‘each one & all together’, enabling passengers to freely move and rotate all the seats to tailor the cabin layout to their specific needs. Each of the concept’s four seats can rotate through 360 degrees in addition to moving forwards and backwards.

The cabin’s width is visually stretched by the wide, symmetrical instrument panel design accented with aluminium dials. Mood lighting helps XIV-1 to achieve the perfect ambience to match its cutting edge design.

eXciting user Interface Vehicle

The key to the XIV-1’s name lies inside the cabin. The user interface embraces the concept of an extended living space rather than providing just a means of transport. Control of many of XIV-1 functions is via the interaction of Smart mobile devices and the vehicle itself. Using the kind of devices that the driver and passengers are likely to be carrying at all times, they can control everything from the audio system, the display of information on the dashboard and online communications.

SSANGYONG TO REVEAL THE CONCEPT XUV 1 IN FRANKFURT

When the doors open to the 64th IAA International Motor Show on the 13th September, SsangYong will be ready to reveal one of the stars of the event - an innovative new compact crossover concept.

The Concept XUV 1 has at its core the ideals of a moving communication space. SsangYong’s designers set themselves the goal of creating a new automobile culture based on performance, safety and an awareness of the environment.

A showcase for the latest SsangYong design capabilities, the Concept XUV 1 uses extensive glass areas along with carefully curved bodywork to look imposing without seeming to appear ‘aggressive’. The wraparound windscreen visually extends the glass area virtually uninterrupted to the large C-pillars, perfectly complemented by a full length glass roof.

Described by its creators as a premium CUV – Crossover Utility Vehicle – the Concept XUV 1 perfectly illustrates the robust image of SsangYong vehicles coupled with an appearance highlighting speed and power. The innovative interior design introduces new 1+1+2 or 1+3 seating layouts, challenging conventional cabin design and highlighting the flexibility available from SsangYong’s latest platform technology.

The spacious interior is also packed with the latest automotive technology, leading to the show car’s name: Concept XUV 1 is derived from Excellent User Interface Vehicle 1. All major cabin functions are controlled via mobile devices and smart instruments, while the coach style door offers easy access to the futuristic cabin.

All this versatility comes within the confines of a compact B segment sized vehicle, a sector which has experienced rapid growth in crossover models in recent years. Offering the high seating position and rugged feel of a full sized SUV without any compromise in running costs, crossover models on a supermini scale are fast becoming the ideal motoring solution for today’s driver.
