Subaru B9 Scrambler

The low, squat two-seater Scrambler combines motor-cycle agility with off-road competence thanks to symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and variable-height air suspension with automatic self-levelling and a ride-height range of between 150 and 200 mm.

The B9 Scrambler boasts a petrol/electric hybrid engine which uses an electric motor up to speeds of around 50 mph, only turning to fossil fuel when the charge drops below a certain level.

Developing Concepts

Achieving both driving joy and environmental performances

Subaru has launched passenger cars such as Legacy, Impreza and Forester that feature unique Symmetrical AWD, offering both driving joy and environmental performance. Combining this DNA and the latest HEV technologies resulted in Subaru's SSHEV system. This system realizes jet-smooth yet awesome acceleration, superb drive , very low fuel consumption, and excellent environmental performances that complies with ultra-low exhaust gas emission, all in an open-roof body design. This new-generation driver's car is called B9 SCRAMBLER. The word "Scramble" suggests seamless on and rough roads, and it reflects our intention to offer refreshing, near-endless open-air motoring in har-mony with the nature. Run-flat tires are used to ensure stability. The variable-height air suspension offers exquisite performances on rough roads. Extended 200mm ground clearance enhances driving performances both on and rough roads.

The HEV systems and their differences HEV Systems

Styling

Supervised by the Chief Designer at Subaru's Advanced Design section Andreas Zapatinas, the B9 Scrambler's styling follows the Subaru B11S introduced at this year's Geneva Show, and is a design study to obtain Subaru's at-a-glance styling identity. The styling, free from stereotypes regarding body dimensions and tire sizes and existing limitations, is advanced yet give somewhat familiar feelings. The design elements found on the B9 Scrambler suggest Subaru's design trends in the 21st century. The face design utilizing air intake and wing motif suggests Subaru's heritage as an aircraft manufacturer. The large wheels and wheel arches indicate superb performance. The side view featuring wedge shape stirs the driver's blood. The interior, especially the dashboard is unified with the motif of wings.

Technology SSHEV (Sequential Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

This newly-developed driving unit realizes smooth and sporty driving with: a high-performance electric motor up to 80km/h; a gasoline engine that assists the motor for uphill roads; and an engine drive at higher speeds. By utilizing the engine's most efficient ranges, the system offers marked improvement in fuel efficiency and environmental performances. Subaru regards this SSHEV as a new-generation automobile electronic control technology that can be used until the realization of the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, and will continue actively with its development. Drive Train The 2-liter horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder SOHC engine, generator, transmission, electric motor and transfer are all aligned. This compact hybrid system can be housed within the footprint of a Symmetrical AWD system. By utilizing Subaru's know-how accumulated during the development of AWD vehicles and the latest technologies for controlling energy and driving-force distribution, very high efficiency is obtained, while balancing road performance, energy-saving performance and impact on environment.

ADA (Active Driving Assist)

Combining a stereo camera with a milliwave radarby utilizing state-of-the-art Censor Fusion technology,* the system assists driver maneuvering and realizes safe, comfortable driving. The "Front Environment Recognition Function," evolved from our stereo image recognition system, and the new "Rear and Side Environment Recognition Function" further enhance the vehicle's overall functionality. As a result, the system provides very high reliability for automated driving in the transportation system to come.

*Censor Fusion technology utilizes composite data gathered by multiple sensors and obtains valuable, high-precision information.

System construction

1. Stereo camera By using a pair of CCD cameras just like human eyes, recognition of perspectives is realized. The camera is built into the upper end of the windshield and at both ends of the rear license plate.

2. Milliwave radar This actively captures the distance from the vehicles running ahead, regardless of long distance and bad weather. The unit is housed inside the front grille.

3. Preview control unit This enhances safe driving by carrying out unified control of the throttle, brakes and VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) utilizing various information and warning to prevent unstable motion.

4. Center display Allows compound indication of data and navigation system information. Setup of ADA system is also possible with this display.
