Original name: マツダロードスターターボコンセプト

MAZDA ROADSTER TURBO

A more powerful lightweight sports car

Power on demand for pure driving pleasure

Mazda Roadster Turbo, a limited-edition model to be available in select markets early in 2004 and shown for the first time at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, is a powerful lightweight sports concept engineered by Mazda for sports car driving pleasure.

Since its debut in 1989, the Roadster, with its compact, two-seat open body format and front engine/rear wheel drive layout, has been prized for its sporty, nimble ride qualities. Mazda continues to research the various ways Roadster enthusiasts worldwide enjoy their vehicles and explore new possibilities for the genre. The Roadster Turbo is a performance model squarely aimed at drivers who demand extra power. Boasting new horsepower gained through turbocharging, the Roadster Turbo offers even greater driving pleasure for the roadster devotee.

1.8-litre turbocharged engine and reinforced drive-train

Roadster Turbo is powered by a 1.8-litre DOHC engine based on the BP-VE [RS] equipped with a turbocharger. Turbocharging assures plentiful power in reserve at high speed, while the high compression ratio also delivers ample low-end torque for smooth and effortless driving. Additionally, tuning of the main exhaust muffler reduces unwanted noise while delivering a sporty exhaust note.

To handle the extra power from the turbocharger, the cooling system receives an increased radiator core volume, the six-speed manual transmission, clutch, propeller shaft and differential have all been optimized, and harder rubber is used for the engine and differential mountings.

Chassis finely tuned to handle turbo power

The four-wheel double-wishbone suspension is bolstered by specially-valved Bilstein shock absorbers (silver paint) and coil springs (red paint), assuring sufficient stroke and an optimally low-slung position. The Roadster Turbo model is fitted with aluminum alloy wheels with a special five-spoke design and larger 205/40R17 tires front and rear. Brake calipers are painted in bold silver to denote the high-performance nature of the car.

Distinctive design projects the sports spirit

Special turbo design treatment and parts are used to visually establish the Roadster Turbo. The front view offers tinted glass headlamps and a unique extra-large air intake in the front bumper. These design elements combine with unique front under-spoiler and recessed projector fog lamp to create a sharp, dynamic expression for the front end.

The Roadster Turbo show vehicle at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show features special two-tone seats with a central section in red fabric, while black fabric is used for the sides to present a sporty and stylish ambience. Door trim is also in red, and red stitching is used to good effect on the shift knob and parking brake lever. The dashboard’s center panel and shift panel are finished in metallic paint. Aluminum alloy pedals and footrests complete Roadster Turbo’s high-performance image.

Special-edition model

The limited-edition turbo model will be introduced only in Japan, North America and Australia. Production will begin early in 2004, with actual production numbers to be confirmed when production begins.
