Honda - J-VX

time-calendar.png 1997

Original name: ホンダJ-VX

A pleasure to drive. Environmentally responsible. Honda's future is provided in this hybrid light sports car.

The J-VX represents Honda's idea of what a 21st century sports car should be. While making driving a joy, it also helps people find new value in sports driving and addresses environmental and safety concerns. Honda's advanced technology, vision, and passion as a world-class innovator are evident in every element of the J-VX.

Main Specifications

Power source

Environmentally sound and highly effcient, ythis powertrain sets a new reference standars for sports cars.

In a world where cars with poor fuel efficiency are being taxed (e.g. the German CO2 tariff), even sports cars need to be environmentally sound. In response to the challenge, Honda developed a hybrid sports car powertrain that is fuel efficient and low on emissions, yet provides a high level of driving enjoyment. This original powertrain gives the J-VX the best characteristics of both Fun Creations and Thoughtful Creations. Besides offering the equivalent of over 30km/liter fuel efficiency (10.15 mode), the J-VX achieves among the world's lowest emission rates thanks to its 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. The IMA system features a slim electric motor that is connected with the engine and functions as a supplemental power source during acceleration. During deceleration, the motor converts the physical energy of car movement into stored electricity. In this way, the IMA system enables ultra-low fuel consumption and cleaner exhaust gas. This unique combination of hybrid powertrain and continuously variable Honda Multi-Matic transmission also results in amazingly smooth acceleration unlike anything experienced before. Moreover, the compact, super-light body and powertrain combine to offer the kind of quick, agile handling only available in lightweight sports cars.

Styling

Even among sports cars, the J-VX is remarkably lightweight. Its compact, aerodynamic form has been thoroughly refined in line with Honda's J-Mover concept of 'Small is Smart'. With its front-engine configuration, 2+2 seating, and nearly ideal front/rear weight ratio delivering true sports car performance, the J-VX is indeed a smart package. Styling, quite naturally, is futuristic. From the front mask, past the sharp discharge headlights, to the glass top roof and down the hindquarters, the body is a single flowing line. The effect is a bold aerodynamic statement resulting from exhaustive research, an organic form designed to grace the streets of future metropolises. The J-VX's styling is unforgettable.

Cockpit

The J-VX cockpit is designed to maximize driving pleasure. Its snug-fitting one-piece, full-bucket seats are highly reminiscent of Formula racing cars and generate anticipation. Controls and switches are positioned to require just the minimum hand and eye movement. This classic approach to cockpit design will always be a viable one and will remain an integral feature of lightweight sports cars. 2+2 seating leaves room enough for luggage on short trips. A glass top emphasizes the open, free feeling of the interior, which is unlike the restrictive atmosphere encountered in most compact cars. Among the J-VX's new features are air-belts that function both as airbags and seatbelts for added safety.
