Du Pont Motors was formed by E. Paul du Mont, a member of the famous family which had widespread interests in munitions and textiles. The motor car company had no connection with any of the other Du Pont enterprises.
The 1920 Model A was powered by a 4.1 litre 4-cylinder engine. Bodies were built in Springfield,MA while engines were built in Wilmington, DE, with final assembly taking place in Moore, PA. The car was well received, but just over 100 of the A and its successor, the B were built between 1920 and 1924.
The Model C used a 6-cylinder Herschell-Spillman, of which 40-odd were made between mid-1923 and the end of 1924. The Model C was replaced by the Model D in 1925, but production of the Du Pont dropped to approximately 1 car a month, with nearly all of those sales going to wealthy customers on the East Coast. The company sold the Moore, PA plant.
The last and best known model of the Du Pont was the Model G, which commenced production in mid-1928. The Model G was powered by a 5.3 litre straight-8 cylinder engine, and featured stylish bodies by leading coachbuilders of the era.
In 1930 Du Pont purchased the Indian Motorcycle Co of Springfield, and Du Pont assembly was transferred to that factory. Model G production continued, along with the new Model H. Only three Model H sedans were built, and Model G production continued until all production stopped in early 1932.
