G.J. McHattan was an Australian automotive manufacturer based in Manly, New South Wales, that operated briefly from 1986 to 1987. The company was known for its production of the G.J.M. Taipan, a roadster that drew inspiration from the classic Cobra design.
The Taipan was notable for being sold exclusively as a complete vehicle, distinguishing it from many other kit car offerings available at the time. It emphasized raw performance, featuring a powerful 7.4-litre V8 engine equipped with twin Garrett turbochargers, which produced an output of 299 brake horsepower. In 1987, the company introduced a more cost-effective option by offering the Chevrolet 350 'small block' V8 engine, which had a displacement of 5790cc.
Despite its short production run, G.J. McHattan's Taipan contributed to the niche market of high-performance roadsters in Australia during the late 1980s.
