Nowadays the list of iconic cars is endless. However, there are still a few that make it to the top of the iconic list. The beauty behind old iconic cars is that they all come with different features and specifications as different brands were known for specific features back in the day. 

Few are as iconic as the first-generation Ford Bronco. Produced between 1966 to 1977, this car has left a mark on car fanatics and has set the standard for many cars to come.

So, let’s explore what makes this vehicle so irreplaceable.

The History of the Ford Bronco

For those interested in cars, there is no way of denying how iconic the first generation of Ford Bronco was. This is down to its high-quality design and its off-roading ability. The Ford Brono is not only a favorite amongst drivers but also collectors. 

In fact, in 1966, this new breed of off-roading vehicles stampeded onto the scene and straight into the hearts of anyone that admires cars. It truly set the mold for modern SUV’s. Today, the 1966 the first model of Ford Bronco is still available to buy through classic car dealerships and auctions. 

However, they may be costly as they are highly sought after by collectors because there were only a limited number produced, making them valuable investments. There are also modern versions of this car on the market after Ford reintroduced the Bronco in 2021 including Big Bend, Black Diamond and Outer Banks which are known for being durable and dependable with the addition of reliable tires which offer better traction and stability on the road. Culturally, the Ford Bronco also became linked to adventure and independence, making it an emblem of the era. 

What Makes the First-Generation Ford Bronco Special

The first-generation Ford Bronco is a world-renowned off-road vehicle, its celebrated for its excellent features and maneuverability. When this car was first released onto the market, it was available in three different body styles including Roadster, Sports Utility, and Wagon, with various features and customizations available to meet customer needs. 

The Roadster offered cautious drivers easy handling especially through rough terrain, while the Sports Utility allowed for seamless driving through cities and rugged paths and the Wagon was ideal for families with plenty of space.

In terms of the construction of the vehicle and its visual design, the classic Ford Bronco has a unique design. Primarily marketed towards those working in the outdoors or adventurers who loved exploring the outdoors as its perfect for off-road trains. As the first model was released such a long time ago, air conditioning wasn’t offered on a Bronco until the vehicle was redesigned in 1978. On top of this, it was only possible to drive a manual Ford Bronco in the early days as automatic transmission wasn’t an option until 1973.

In 1966, there were only a few options when it came to off-roading driving vehicles, making the classic Ford Bronco all the more appealing. The classic Ford Bronco had a strong frame and tough suspension, making it great for rough terrains. Its short wheelbase and high ground clearance permitted it to move without hassle over obstacles. The four-wheel-drive system and sturdy build also allowed the tires to grip properly on various surfaces, minimizing the likelihood of accidents.

The original Ford Broncos also came with a standard 170 cubic-inch inline-six engine producing 105 horsepower. Car owners were also given to option of other engines including a 289 cubic-inch V8 and later a 302 cubic-inch V8, offering even more power and performance. For its time, the engine options in the original Ford Broncos were considered quite powerful. The 289 cubic-inch and 302 cubic-inch V8 engines offered robust performance and were well-suited for the Bronco's off-road capabilities and rugged design.

To this date, the first-generation Ford Bronco is still deemed to be a reliable, irreplaceable model. With its special designs including the Roadster, Sports Utility and Wagon versions as well as its powerful engine, it was regarded to be ahead of its time in many ways. As more and more cars are being produced, car manufacturers continue to strive to replicate the Ford Bronco with their own creations.
