In a grand tribute to one of the most iconic models in French automotive history, DS Automobiles has unveiled the SM TRIBUTE, a unique reinterpretation of the classic SM grand tourer from the 1970s. Marking a decade since the creation of DS Automobiles, SM TRIBUTE is both a homage to the original model and a forward-looking study of design, reflecting the brand's continuous evolution in art and innovation. Its debut is set against the prestigious backdrop of the Chantilly Arts & Elegance competition, where DS Automobiles has become a fixture.
Revisiting a Legend: The SM and Its Influence
The original SM, launched in 1970, quickly became a symbol of French automotive ingenuity. Designed by the renowned Robert Opron, the SM stood out with its sleek, aerodynamic lines, luxurious interior, and technological advancements, including a V6 engine and hydropneumatic suspension for superior comfort and road handling. These qualities cemented its status as a cult classic, admired by collectors for its unparalleled blend of performance and style.
According to Thierry Metroz, Design Director at DS Automobiles, the company is continuously exploring the legacy of the SM to inspire future models: "We are working on the genes of our iconic models to fuel our research into the shape of future models."
The Birth of SM TRIBUTE: A Community-Driven Creation
In 2020, DS Automobiles shared a series of design sketches titled #SM2020, inviting its community to engage in reimagining the classic SM. The response was overwhelming, with fans expressing a deep connection to the brand's heritage and a desire to preserve the spirit of the original design. This feedback was central to the development of the SM TRIBUTE, which incorporates modern innovations while paying homage to the iconic features that made the SM legendary.
As Metroz recalls, "Our community sent us strong messages... it didn’t want the original design to be spoilt."
A Visionary Design: Melding Past and Future
SM TRIBUTE is more than just a reimagination—it's a contemporary design study that explores what the SM might have evolved into had it continued to develop over the past 50 years. The design retains the SM's hallmark characteristics: the aerodynamic front profile, elongated bonnet, and flowing lines that give the vehicle its unmistakable elegance. However, modern touches abound, including a bi-tone color scheme that bridges the design philosophies of the 1930s, 1970s, and today. This feature, first introduced in the DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE concept, has become a signature element in DS Automobiles' recent designs.
One of the most striking elements is the front end, where the original glass section that once showcased the headlamp modules has been transformed into a 3D digital display framed by an advanced lighting system. This feature nods to the SM's heritage while showcasing DS Automobiles' commitment to technological innovation.
According to Frédéric Soubirou, Head of Exterior Design at DS Automobiles, the SM TRIBUTE was inspired by studying various SM prototypes, including presidential models: "They had a striking trait, like a signature. They gave the impression of flying on the road."
Interior: A Luxurious Nod to the Original
The SM TRIBUTE's interior also honors the original 1970 model while embracing cutting-edge technology. Retaining the iconic dashboard design with its circular instruments, the new version introduces modern elements like projection-based information displays and a curved "screen console," creating an immersive, futuristic driving experience.
The luxurious materials, including ivory-colored leather and Alcantara®, give the cabin an opulent feel, while laser-engraved leatherwork on the door panels adds an artistic touch. This blending of decorative arts and automotive design is a hallmark of DS Automobiles' approach, according to Vincent Lobry, Head of Color, Materials, and Finishes (CMF) Design.
SM TRIBUTE at Chantilly Arts & Elegance
The unveiling of the SM TRIBUTE at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance marks a special moment for DS Automobiles, which has been a partner of the event since its inception in 2014. Positioned alongside an original SM, the SM TRIBUTE will compete in the Concours d'Elegance on September 15th, 2024.
Over the years, DS Automobiles has secured multiple awards at the event, including the Innovation Prize for the DS E-TENSE PERFORMANCE. This year's participation continues the brand's tradition of showcasing cutting-edge designs that honor its rich heritage.
Conclusion: A Tribute to Innovation and Heritage
The SM TRIBUTE stands as a testament to DS Automobiles' dedication to avant-garde design and its ability to bridge the past, present, and future. By reinterpreting the legendary SM with modern design cues and advanced technology, DS Automobiles has created a model that not only pays homage to one of the most innovative cars in history but also signals its continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
As Thierry Metroz sums it up, “We have respected the original design through its spirit and details... we have included a lot of details about what DS Automobiles models and our future projects are.”
