FRANKFURT 2015 - SsangYong XLV-Air Concept

Sep 22, 2015

ssangyong has issued the following press release:

ssangyong showcases ‘tivoli long’ with xlv-air concept

- an suv concept for those with an active lifestyle

- a true multi-role vehicle combing dynamic styling, robust design and practicality

- the urban suv that interacts with its passengers

- a choice of powertrains – euro 6 1.6 litre petrol, 1.6 litre diesel, two and four-wheel drive

development concept

the xlv-air is being exhibited for the first time at this year’s frankfurt motor show, and is an evolution of the xlv production concept seen at the geneva motor show in 2014.

the car is the pre-production model of tivoli long which is scheduled to go on sale in 2016.

combined annual sales of both the tivoli and tivoli long are forecast to exceed 100,000 cars next year.

sharing the tivoli platform, xlv-air harmoniously blends ssangyong’s distinctive suv body design with dynamic styling cues such as the ‘floating’ roofline of a sports coupe. but in addition, the longer body maximises the load carrying potential with increased boot space required of a multi-role suv. it is 279mm longer than the tivoli and will offer an increased boot capacity of 720 litres compared with 423 litres for the tivoli.

 styling concept

based on ssangyong’s design philosophy of ‘nature born – 3 motion’, the design of the xlv-air is informed by the power and dynamics found in nature. key elements are its dynamic looks, strong-looking body shape and harmoniously matching coupe-style floating roof line. this blends to achieve the sleek look of a shooting brake with strength and masculinity. the car offers an approach that is beyond mere practical transportation, but a car that ensures driver comfort, safety and essentially, desirability. the xlv-air will add to the brand’s new direction for producing contemporarily styled urban suvs, and provide a fun driving experience in daily city driving.

exterior

the exterior styling of the xlv-air follows the brand concept of the ‘exciting smart lifestyle vehicle’. the subtle yet dynamic character lines flow rhythmically throughout the body volume. at the front, its shoulder wing design resembles the spread wings of an eagle, and neatly integrates between the radiator grille and headlights, displaying a slim yet wide look. the black d pillar is another hallmark of ssangyong’s recent concept cars.

while presenting a sporty and dynamic design externally, the xiv-air also provides class-leading space for both passengers and their luggage for great practicality. the 2-tone black roof line gives the car a low and sporty look, while the angled black a pillars afford a wide and open look in profile.

the front design of xlv-air is derived from the xiv-air concept showcased at the paris motor show in 2014, and underlines its dynamic masculine image with the use of red detailing around the front air intake, side sills, door mirrors and below the rear bumper.

interior

as with the exterior look, the interior design creates a dynamic environment. the same wide spread wing cue seen at the front of the car is also used across the dashboard, helping to maximise the sense of space and interior width, while continuing the theme inspired by nature.

achieving functional beauty through simple design, the refined black interior tones perfectly with the beige coloured detailing, and engenders a cossetting feeling. covered in a new geonic fabric cloth produced in partnership with kolon glotech, the front seats are ventilated, and patterned in a natural design that echoes the overall design direction.

eco-friendly powertrains

xlv-air is offered with a choice of either a euro 6 compliant 1.6 litre petrol or 1.6 litre diesel engine, and matched with the option of a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission, two-wheel drive or four wheel drive. electric power steering gives effortless steering control, and with the 6-speed manual transmission model there is a stop/start system to further reduce co2 emissions.

aimed at european markets, the co2 emission level of the 1.6 litre diesel (115ps) engine is just 120~130g/km (two wheel drive, manual with stop/start), while the 1.6 litre petrol engine (two wheel drive, manual with stop/start), achieves co2 emissions of 160~170g/km, and is ideal for those looking for economy, value and mid-low speed driving performance.

equipment

the vehicle’s high specification includes latest technology features such as electric power steering, smart steering and stop/start, as well as equipment that includes a powered safety sunroof, tomtom 7” navigation and smart audio system, ventilated front seats, dual-zone air conditioning and a rearview reversing camera. safety is also a major priority with electronic stability programme (esp), seven airbags (dual, side, curtain and driver’s knee protection) and high intensity discharge headlights.
