Apollo Fibreglass Industries was established in 1973 in Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia. The company entered the market as a latecomer to the Volkswagen-based street buggy segment, which was gaining popularity during that era. The Apollo buggy was designed with a sports-oriented appeal, featuring a T-roof, although it did not significantly differ from other buggies available at the time.

Despite its sporty design, the Apollo buggy was short-lived and was eventually succeeded by the 1974 Kalita. The Kalita represented another brief attempt to position the buggy as a sports car, but like its predecessor, it did not achieve lasting success in the automotive market.
