Dan La Lee

UNITED STATES

time-calendar.png 1938

This streamlined car, created by California airman Dan La Lee, was a unique blend of aviation-inspired design and automotive innovation. Drawing from his experience as a pilot, La Lee incorporated streamlined features similar to those found in transport planes, including a rudder-like tail for improved aerodynamics. Powered by a supercharged V8 engine, the car could reportedly reach speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, while still maintaining impressive fuel efficiency, achieving 18 miles per gallon at 60 mph.

The car's sleek design minimized wind resistance, with the front wheels covered by independent "pants" that turned with the wheels, ensuring smooth airflow. One of its standout features is the extensive use of electric controls. For example, a push button on the dashboard opens the doors, and another button operates the disappearing top, which folds away much like the retractable landing gear of an airplane. When raised, the top forms a durable steel turret roof, adding to the car's futuristic aesthetic and safety.

Built on a 112-inch wheelbase and sitting low to the ground without running boards, the car also has retractable headlights that hide seamlessly into the fenders. Overall, Dan La Lee's car is a forward-thinking design that combined performance, style, and innovative features, influenced heavily by his background in aviation.
