Toyota - NCSV

time-calendar.png 1999

Original name: トヨタ NCSV

Distinctly Fun to Drive

“The NCSV is a distinctly different kind of vehicle. And that’s exactly the point—it’s aimed at those buyers who want something that differs from the conventional,” explains Chief Engineer Takeshi Yoshida. Targeted at drivers in their 20s and early 30s, the NCSV has been designed to embody a modern, fun lifestyle.

An everyday-use roadster, the NCSV is great for commuting and perfect for cruising around in your free time. It’s convenient to use, and it looks cool. Take it on a long drive. Take it on a short drive.

Either way, you’re sure to find it a distinct pleasure.

Stylishly Sporty

The NCSV looks good when it’s parked and good when it’s on the run. Its futuristic body lines and aerodynamic profile, partly reminiscent of a plane flying through the sky, impart that combination of style, beauty and power which lies at the heart of the romance of modern travel.

From the side, the NCSV is a sporty road-hugger brimming with youthful energy and vigor. The shallow angles formed by both the A and B pillars give it a sleek profile, while also lending the cabin the secure, closed-in feel of a sports car. Low ground clearance and lowprofile 215/45 17-inch tires enhance the sporty look.

At the front, the lower and upper body halves join seamlessly to create a solid, punchy nose. The powerful, yet practical, image is repeated in the rear, whose design was inspired by the rear view of an ultrasonic jet plane. Combining the practicality of a three-door hatchback with the low-slung body, wide tires and angled tail lights of a sports coupe, the rear view conveys the same qualities of sturdiness and safety.

That Cockpit Feel

“Both inside and outside, the NCSV sports a fresh, modern design crafted to appeal to a generation that has grown up in the age of computing and electronics,” continues Yoshida. The interior surfaces employ a new kind of material with a functional, high-tech, metallic look. The instrument panel connects seamlessly with the central gearshift cluster and the door trim to produce a smooth, flowing image.

You almost feel like you are floating within the car, secure in your very own cockpit.

In Touch with the Information Age

A whole host of features is geared to the younger and more technoliterate.

The driver and front passenger both benefit separately from clear, multi-purpose monitor screens that can cleanly display a wide variety of information. Located on the island console between the rear seats is a third display that can store away when not in use.

Future applications of this intelligent interior might include increased communication between the front and the rear of the vehicle, or entertainment to help make long journeys more fun.

Seating for a Modern Lifestyle

In the NCSV, even the seats look ultra-modern. The materials exude a refined, sporty feel, while also having a slightly metallic look. The seats are fully independent in the front, with a 60:40 split in the back to allow for more seat room when hauling long items. Easy to slide across, they all recline for extra comfort. In an added twist, the rear seats can also slide 120 mm (4.7 inches) forward, giving you even more freedom. The luggage space, which can be covered by a storable hard shelf, lies behind the rear seats. With the seats folded forward, the NCSV is capacious enough that you can create a space for carrying around all your gear a full 1.5 meters (59 inches) in length.
