In 1986 Kenyan leader Daniel Arop Moi challenged the University of Nairobi to manufacture a car. The Nyayo (Swahili for footsteps) was the first attempt to manufacture a car in Kenya. 5 prototypes were built each powered by a 1.2 litre engine and having front-wheel drive. The Nyayo Motor Corporation was established in 1990 to manufacture the Pioneer, but production never eventuated. All 5 prototypes still exist, although only one is complete and driveable.
