World premiere of Moal Gatto at Monterey

Aug 12, 2010

The Moal gatto is a custom-built one of a kind automobile embodying the best automobile design and engineering traditions of the 1950s. The car is "dressed up" with the hand-beaten aluminium panels and utilizes a semi-monocoque chassis together with Ferrari V12 engine, built to 250  GTO specifications, developing 300 hp.

PRESS RELEASE:

OAKLAND, California — Family-owned Moal Coachbuilders is perhaps better known for its custom-built, vintage-look hot rods and classic-car restorations. But Steve Moal aims to fine-tune that image with the Gatto, a hand-crafted, aluminum-bodied coupe inspired by European sports cars of the late '50s and created for a Bay Area investment manager.

The Gatto will be shown to the public next week at Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, in conjunction with the Monterey Historic Weekend.

Built for Bill Grimsley, the Gatto is built on a semi-monocoque chassis, with hand-formed aluminum body panels crimped to a subframe matrix. The result is a car that weighs only 2,300 pounds.

Power comes from a 300-horsepower Ferrari V12 built to 250 GTO specs, with six Weber carbs and mated to a Tremec five-speed manual gearbox.

Features include polished Borrani wire knock-off wheels, custom-fitted leather seats, oversize gauges and air-conditioning.
